MAPS
Any old road map or Westprint: The BirdsvilleTrack

Once a feared death track where drovers, mobs of cattle and foolish outback travellers in ill equpped vehicles met their gruesome destiny, now a days the Birdsville track is a long boring yawn. The road is an excellent gravel road where you can easily do 90-100 km/h. The friendly people at the Mungerannie Roadhouse and the turn-off out to Kalamurina Station are the only two highlights along this track. (I know that some guide books disagree...). In Birdsville don't miss a visit to the (new) Birdsville Hotel and to the Working Museum where John who is a bit of a character will guide you around.
From Birdsville you can head west out into the Simpson Desert if you are well prepared. Be aware that going from east to west through the Simpson Desert is considerably harder since the dunes are steeper on the east side due to the mainly westerly winds. You can head north towards Bedourie and Boulia (two other non events) on nice gravel roads.
